Hampton Bays PHYSICAL education
Physical Education is an integral part of the school day. Through the medium of exercise, games and sports the students learns about themselves; what he/she is capable of doing and how he/she can adapt and relate to the world around him.
Proficiency and Competency in a wide variety of Physical Education skills gives a student personal and social mobility in his/her work and play activities and helps set a foundation for present and future success in life.The Hampton Bays Physical Education Program is dedicated to promoting lifetime fitness and physical activity, and enhancing personal fitness, health and wellness for all students. To that end, the focus of this curriculum is to help all students become informed, independent decision-makers capable of planning for enjoyable lifetime fitness and physical activity and achieving personal fitness and sport activity goals. The objectives of the curriculum are to assist students to: • Become physically active and physically fit.
• Acquire knowledge of the benefits of physical activity, health and wellness, and the principles of fitness.
• Become an individual capable of designing his or her own personal fitness program.
Our physical education program aligns the curriculum and instruction with the New York State Learning Standards and the NASPE Content Standards. The complex motor and sport activities are organized into eight categories (team passing sports, net/wall sports, striking/fielding sports, target sports, dance and aesthetics, outdoor activities, personal performance and personal fitness actitivies). Students will be assigned to classes by grade (9,10,11,12). The sport activities will be assigned by grade from each of the eight sport activity categories.
At Hampton Bays High School we utilize the New York State Physical Education Profile as an assessment tool for grading all of our classes. The New York State Physical Education Profile is an optional assessment tool created for school district physical education programs. The PE Profile helps the teachers provide evidence of individual student progress in meeting the physical education learning standards; and provide evidence to improve the overall quality a district’s physical education program.

Hampton Bays Physical Education Curriculum
9th grade: Students are enrolled in the Individual/Partner Sports Curriculum.
10th grade: Students are enrolled in the Team Sports Curriculum.
11th and 12th grade: Students are allowed to pick what curriculum they would like to participate in during that year. They can choose either Individual/Partner Sports, Team Sports or Fitness and Dance.The school scheduling will do their best to give that student their first choice in class selection.

- The Individual/Partner Sports curriculum consists of units such as Project Adventure, Walking & Jogging, Badminton, Pickleball, Table Tennis, Golf, Tennis, Project Adventure Outdoor Elements, Weight Training and Non-traditional sports.
- The Team Sports curriculum consists of units such as Flag Football, Basketball, Team Handball, Floor Hockey, Volleyball, Softball and Ultimate Frisbee.
- The Fitness and Dance curriculum consists of units such as Dance Cardio, Body Toning, Yoga, Pilates, Step Cardio,Pound Rockout workout, creative dance units; Latin dance, Zumba, and Hip Hop.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
- Physical Education is a year long course that every student must attend (two or three times a week) every other day throughout the year.
- The successful completion of 4 years of physical education is required for graduation in New York State. (1/4 credit earned each semester = ½ credit 1 year) 2 credits, 8 semesters, are required.
- Final semester average must be 65 or greater in order to receive physical education credit.
- Any student failing a semester of physical education will be required to take physical education the next available semester by taking two classes.
- It is the students responsibility to make-up all written tests and skill assessment tests after school.
- Student will also be asked take part in a fitness assessment. At Hampton Bays the students will take part in different fitness assessments each school year. The teachers will emphasize students individual improvement (personal best), self-assessment and fitness planning for individual improvement. Students will be asked to give maximal effort so teachers can properly evaluate and help to improve fitness levels. Fitness assessment will help evaluate cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and overall wellness.
Attendance
- Attendance is mandatory.
- More than 14 absences in a year may result in a student being denied credit for physical education . (Absences are recorded anytime the student is not present for his or her physical education class.)
- Being unprepared 5 times in one quarter will result in a failing grade.
- Athletes must participate in class in order to be eligible for their sport practice or game that day.
- An injury or illness, which caused you to be unable to participate in class for 1 week or more, requires a Doctor’s note.Special arrangements will be made for students with long- term (more than a week) medical illnesses or injuries. Skill assessment
- Skill assessment are taken at the end of very unit continuously throughout the year.
- Sport and physical activity performance assessments that have been designed to determine levels of competency and proficiency in eight different categories of physical activity: Team Passing Sports, Net/Wall Sports, Target Sports, Striking/Fielding Sports, Dance and Aesthetic Activities, Outdoor Activities, Personal Performance Activities, and Fitness Activities.
- The assessments are authentic performance tasks scored on a four-point Rubric.

Knowledge assessment
- Cognitive performance assessments are a set of stimulus-based questions in a written format designed to determine understanding and application of knowledge about physical fitness, personal and social responsibility in physical activity settings, and community resources for physical activity.
- Study guides will be given for each unit for the students to prepare for the quiz.
- Located in the left navigation box are different unit tabs which will information on that unit. Information provided will range from rules, history, facts, playing field/court dimensions, and study guides.
sportsmanship/personal relations
- In order to receive a hundred for the day for sportsmanship/personal relations if students demonstrate teamwork, cooperatively work with others, encourage their classmates, demonstrate leadership, be courteous and a positive role model throughout each and every class to their classmates and their teacher.
participation/preparation
LATENESS:
- It’s the student’s responsibility to be on time. The locker room will be locked 5 minutes after the bell. You will be considered unprepared if you are not in the locker room on time; even if you have a pass from a teacher.
- Student's will also be marked as late if they do not change quickly and get to class 5 minutes after the bell. They are expected to be in class 5 minutes after the last passing bell rings.
- In order to receive a hundred for the day for participation students must be in class on time. Students must be actively participating, demonstrating teamwork, cooperatively working with others, encouraging their classmates, demonstrating leadership, be courteous and a good sport throughout each and every class.
- Students will be deducted points if they are unprepared, uncooperative, discourteous, if they do not participate, cut class, argue, show no teamwork, constantly need to be reminded to be on task, and cause disruptions.
- Gym shorts or sweatpants (no cut off jeans or zippered shorts)
- T-Shirt or Sweatshirt (full t-shirts that cover torso, no profanity, drug or alcohol related shirts will be allowed in class, no tank tops)
- Socks other than those worn to school
- Sneakers to prevent injury
- Long hair tied back
- All jewelry removed and locked in locker
- No gum chewing!!
Locker room rules
- One locker per student. Each locker is equipped with a combination lock. Your teacher will give you the combination during the first week of school.
- Powder and deodorant are suggested, but NO GLASS CONTAINERS AT ANY TIME!!!!!!!!! Plastic containers are safer for everyone!
- Remember that there are over 800 students using the facilities and each of us must help take care of them. Throw out your garbage, don’t slam the lockers or the locker room doors, and respect other students’ space and possessions.
